Anatomic changes in lung parenchyma due to aging process.

چکیده
of the lungs, including alveoli, is usually divided into two portions, i.e., the airway and the respiratory portion. Although the latter is morphologically subdivided into the respiratory bronchioli, alveolar ducts, alveolar sacs and alveoli, it will be much more useful to divide the respiratory portion into two parts, i.e., the central ducts succeeding the airway and alveoli surrounding the central ducts. In 1961’ we found morphologically the dilatation of the central ducts in the senile lungs. Recently, Weibel’ investigated the volume contribution of the central ducts and alveoli for five excised lungs from patients from 8 to 74 years old. He found that the volume contribution of the alveoli, corresponding to the alveolar air, was higher (62 per cent) than that of the central ducts in three younger individuals. On the contrary in two older individuals this value decreased by 56 per cent. In his paper he stated, “The small number of cases obviously does not justify conclusive statement with respect to changes of volume proportion of the lung generally attributable to age.” At this point, it is necessary to notice that in his estimation of volume contribution, the volume fraction of the respiratory bronchioli was not included. It would be due to the difficulty to estimate the volumetric fraction of this part by means of his modified method, applying Delesse and Rosiwal’s principles. The purpose of this paper is to estimate the variation of the volume contribution between the alveoli and central ducts including respiratory bronchioli by means of our new method with respect to the aging process. The aging lung
There are many age-associated changes in the respiratory and pulmonary immune system. These changes include decreases in the volume of the thoracic cavity, reduced lung volumes, and alterations in the muscles that aid respiration. Muscle function on a cellular level in the aging population is less efficient. The elderly population has less pulmonary reserve, and cough strength is decreased in t...
متن کاملRegeneration of the Aging Lung: A Mini-Review.
Natural lung aging is marked by molecular changes that occur during development, maturation, and late-life decline. At the cellular and whole organ level, degenerative changes that are a hallmark of natural aging (shorter telomeres, increased expression of cellular senescence markers, increased DNA damage, oxidative stress, and apoptosis, accompanied by diminished elasticity) reach pathological...
متن کاملInjection Laryngoplasty Treatment for Vocal Atrophy in the Elderly
Elderly patients present deterioration in voice quality due to anatomical and functional changes of the larynx associated with the aging process, and other voice disorders common in the elderly population. Identified causes of geriatric voice dysfunction include anatomic changes in the larynx such as vocal fold atrophy, central neurologic conditions (e.g. stroke, Parkinson’s disease, essential ...

متن کاملThe protective effect of Sambucus ebulus against lung toxicity induced by gamma irradiation in mice
The aim of present study was to investigate the potential antioxidant and lung protective activities of Sambucus ebulus (SE) against toxicity induced by gamma irradiation. Hydroalcoholic extract of SE (20, 50 and 100 mg/kg) was studied for its lung protective activity. Phenol and flavonoid contents of SE were determined. Male C57 mice were divided into ten groups with five mice per group. Only ...
